After-treatment FAQs

We do our best to answer your questions before, during, and after treatment. But if you forgot to ask us something, not to worry! We've compiled a list of FAQs below. Don't see your question here? Reach out and ask us!

  • How long will I feel better for?

Ultimately, how long the effects of treatment last depends on the individual patient. The good news is that unlike some other treatments, TMS therapy and Spravato® have been shown to work again if they’ve worked once. If you’d like to start another round of treatment with us, reach out.

  • What can I do to continue the progress I made?

Seek guidance and support from your treating psychiatrist and/or therapist to develop strategies that will help you after treatment ends. To help maintain your improvement or remission from depression, you can also incorporate habits that help support a healthy quality of life post-treatment, such as regular exercise, a healthy nutrition plan, therapy, and enriching social activities.

  • How will I know if I should have another round of treatment?

Though some patients may need maintenance therapy in managing their depression, others won’t. That’s why it’s important to maintain communication with your primary mental health provider.

  • If my depression comes back, does that mean treatment didn't work?

No. Unfortunately, if someone experiences depression once (even if they reach remission from it), they’re more likely to experience depression again.

  • Does my psychiatrist/therapist know about the progress I've made?

If you’ve consented for us to provide information to your doctor, we’ve updated them on your progress.

  • Are there any "withdrawal" symptoms from stopping treatment?

No. You may miss coming in to talk with your Care Team, but there’s no physical side effects from ending treatment.

  • What happens if I finished treatment but I don’t feel much better?

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

    • With some treatments, such as TMS therapy, patients can continue to experience improvements in the weeks after treatment ends. That’s another reason why it’s important to continue to track your mood and symptoms.
    • At Greenbrook, we offer several options for the treatment of depression. If you haven’t felt much relief from your depression symptoms with one treatment (such as TMS therapy), we encourage you to see if another treatment may be beneficial for you (such as nasal esketamine).
    • We encourage you to stay in contact with your primary mental health care provider, even if you've reached remission. If you haven't reached remission, your provider can help guide your next steps to feeling better.
  • If my depression comes back, will it be different?

It depends. Some people experience the same depression symptoms during every episode, others experience new ones. That’s why it’s important to familiarize yourself with all the symptoms of depression, so that you can engage with treatment if need be.

  • Do I need another consultation if I want to engage in treatment again?

This depends on how long it’s been since we treated you and whether there have been many changes in your treatment and symptom history since then. If you think you’d benefit from another round of treatment with us, we’re happy to schedule another no-cost consultation for you.
